We offer a number of services in the field of fire engineering: Consulting in standardization and regulatory affairs, analytical and empirical fire modelling, and numerical simulations using Fire Dynamics Simulator (FDS).
We produce statements and calculations concerning fire safety in buildings to demonstrate that a project meets the demands set by the national regulations in Finland (Decree of the Ministry of the Environment on the Fire Safety of Buildings, 848/2017). Our imperative is to find economical solutions without compromise on safety.
We serve our clients in the following fields of expertise:
We find and report the appropriate classification and limiting quantities that set the framework for architectural and structural design.
We model and simulate fire development in a building either numerically or using empirical formulae, choosing the appropriate method. For numerical simulations we use the FDS fluid dynamics code. We pay attention to the boundary conditions and the behaviour of structural elements in the fire compartment and the building. We evaluate and verify the credibility of our simulations numerically with a grid density study and physically with a sensitivity study.
We determine the required safe egress time to ensure it does not exceed the available safe egress time.
We perform calculations to assess the risk of fire spreading between buildings and find means to reduce it to an acceptable level. Firewalls and categoric distance requirements may be unnecessarily costly or prohibitive.
We search for prudent ways to use wood in construction when there is need to deviate from prescriptive fire safety norms.
Projects to investigate and improve fire safety in buildings.
The core competencies of Vuonum Ltd., founded in spring 2025, are fire simulations, fluid dynamics, and a deep understanding of the Finnish fire safety code and the ability to apply it. Both a prescriptive fire safety design, following the code, and a more flexible performance-based design fall within our field of expertise.
